Giant Robot is proud to host a "Choegal" release party attended by artist David Choe.

Raised on comic books, affected by street art, and inspired by crime, women, and music, Choe has developed a unique and restless style that is effortless yet meticulous and focused yet dirty. Since the artist contributed his first illustration to Giant Robot magazine in 1997, he has exhibited in solo shows around the world (at all three Giant Robot galleries as well as in Paris, Tokyo, and London) and also been featured on VBS-TV's popular Thumbs Up! series. Choegal is his first wood figure: extremely detailed, totally hand painted, and featuring a head that rotates to expose three facial expressions. This piece is strictly limited to 1,000 pieces.

From 4:00-7:00 on Saturday, January 3, 2009, Choe will be on hand to sign Choegal figures, as well as the brand new issue of Giant Robot. In addition to writing his regular column, he provided cover art and design elements found throughout the magazine.

ART SCHOOL CONFIDENTIAL

hey fuckers your in for a real treat, my friend rob sato, from my old art school days, is gonna unleash his first solo show in los angeles at giant robot, i got a painting from him almost a year ago, it's so warped and drenched in details im still finding new shit in it everyday, here's the details:
Giant Robot is proud to present Dirty Paper Machines 3 by Rob Sato at GR2.

Paintings and illustrations by Rob Sato have been known to mix animals and humans in strange yet appealing ways. In addition to participating in numerous group and solo art shows since 2001, he received the prestigious Xeric Grant awarded to up-and-coming comic-book artists in 2004, allowing him to publish Burying Sandwiches.

"When I heard this show was actually going to happen, I made plans to drop all projects and cut my hours at my day job," says Sato. "This situation has produced work which digs deeper into themes I usually try to stuff into pictures. It's a rich mix of humor, mayhem, sadness, horror, adventure, heavy metal, science fiction, history, pastoral beauty, questionable behavior, and true love . Of course, some of it is just silly."

For Dirty Paper Machines, Sato is preparing about 60 pieces. Sizes range from tiny one-inch paintings to 30" x 44". In addition, he will have one new mini-comic, some small screenprints, and a large Ultrachrome Giclee print.

A reception for the artist will take place from 6:30 to 10:00 on Saturday, January 17

OBAMA WATERCOLOR COVER

ever since i did the obama poster, i get emails every week asking me to explain, the importance of art in this last presidential election, and how i think the art effected the campaign, and why i decided to paint this image, and why so many other artists are painting obama, all these questions are answered and covered in the newest issue of GIANT ROBOT, it's an awesome in depth article covering all the key players in the art campaign from shepard fairey, to upper playground, so if you ever wanted to know, get it
here's what eric had to say ,
"New issue of GR. Behind the scenes just a bit: Yes, it's an Obama cover, by David Choe, most of you may have seen his other image, but this is actually a water color that was almost like a study, but sometimes, the studies turn out to be great. This is one of those examples. Upper Playground worked with this image as well, in their huge quest in helping the ascension of Barack Obama as a candidate and President.

Why an Obama cover? Perhaps some of you are sick of seeing pop culture images of the President-Elect. I honestly was getting to that point, and that's when I thought maybe I could learn more about it, and explain it to others who maybe felt the same way. I happen to have the access, so I actually wrote an article about how Street Art worked with the Obama movement. I tried to explain the story of how artists like Shepard Fairey, Date Farmers, David Choe, Ron English, and many many others, with the help of brands like Upper Playground, Obey Giant, and an artist friendly PR dude, Yosi Sergant helped make street art play a role in this election.

It's one of my longer articles, and I did the best I could to construct stories from different angles.

Part two, we have an exclusive interview with Barack Obama's sister - I guess "The First Sister" Maya Soetoro-Ng. Her words are great too and we have a couple of cool photos of her and her brother in his old crib. Yep, he eats cereal just like us. Hope you like it."

L.A. to MIAMI, artfagged out

this shit looks like photoshop, you cant really tell in this photo, but the entire thing is needlepoint

probably one of the most influential images from my childhood, i finally got to see the original robert williams painting, that graced the Guns'n'roses appetite for destruction album,i used to stare at this art while listening to both sides of the tape, over and over, the original was going for $350,000

if you read giant robot magazine and ever wondered what the creator looked like, here he is

i went to LACMA with my mom, mike, jenny, and their baby maya, Maya liked the andy warhol camoflauge but immediately started crying when she saw MJ

FRENCH, me, Kenton Parker, at SCION self portrait show in miami

i still have never eaten white castle, but i guess KRYSTAL burgers is the southern counterpart to it, and much tastier, sam took me to the one in fort lauderdale after we got comics at TATE's , we ate 17 burgers each(sam refused to hold the burgers for this picture)

Mac and Retna have done some epic pieces together in the past, but this black and white banger, they were working on in miami, is the best one yet

the FRIENDS WITH YOU continue with their world domination of fun

this german art collective called GELATIN make all kinds of weird shit, they made a tube you look through, so you can look right at your butthole while your taking a shit, so you can see the shit come out, of course they had to be german right?, anyways they also make cool things like this, which was coin operated and actually worked , until Tury sat in it and broke it.

Hiro's Yaku-san, best japanese tapa's in miami

DRUM TRACK

A few years ago when i lived in san Jose Joe to recorded me fucking around on my drums in my kitchen and used the audio to animate some of my drawings.

a few years later when me and pete were fucking around on some short films, he grabbed my drum track from the animation and looped it, and played crazy organs over it

i love fucking around!

BATCUNT

i started stealing spawn toys when i was 15, a few years too old to be doing that, but i loved todd mcfarlane and i loved the toys and i didnt have any money so i stole them, It got a little worse, i got a job at toys'r'us as the guy that assembles the bikes when you purchase them, it was me and this older black guy, he got pissed at me because i was working too quick , he said as i recall,"hey chino , slow down, we gonna get paid either way, whats the rush?" he complained to management that i was playing heavy metal devil music (KORN,deftones, sonic youth)too loud, and it was affecting his work so they moved me out to the floor, where i was deemed too unfriendly to customers (he never smiles), so i was moved quickly to stockroom, where no one spoke english and every single toy'r'us safety rule was broken and suicidal tendencies could be played loud, and where i was in charge of guess what? stocking Spawn toys!!! i would dump boxes of toys in the dumpster, and then keep all the rare , one-to-a-box chase figures and sell the rest to local comic shops and nerds(this was before ebay). soon i had every toy in the world at my house, it was starting to get quite embarrassing, (a few years later i got a job in porn so i had nothing but porn, comics, toys, and an electronic drum set in my house, it looked identical to the dude's house in the movie 40 year old virgin), once i had everything, i needed more! i needed the rarest of the rarest , so i started to collect misprinted, discolored and mispackaged toys, i'd scan every box, and once in a great while, i'd find that hidden treasure,i got a nathan summers aka: cable where they forgot to paint his face,i got a X-force strong guy that they packaged upside down, soon it grew into collecting all things fucked and fucked up, i had bootleg transformers from Bangladesh(an orange and a purple soundwave) and counterfeit GI JOES, but like all boys , after i got a taste of pussy all that foolishness faded into the background.
until!!!
the newest issue of BATMAN #10 written by Frank Miller, art by Jim Lee with alternate cover by Frank Quitely , had just come out to great controversy, it was the first time in the entire BATMAN and mainstream DC comics universe that the word CUNT was used in a mainstream super hero comic, three of my favorite comic book people in one comic with cuss words, i had to fucking have it , only to find out on the news: "destroy all copies of Batman & Robin #10 this week was apparently made at DC’s request because the black boxes used to cover obscenities deemed too extreme in the dialogue were not dark enough to make the words illegible in all cases" so DC destroyed all the copies and then had to reprint them again using darker boxes, So the inner nerd hunter in me came out once again
Recently i had the great honor of having Jim Lee ,one of the best super hero artists of all time, purchase my painting EXODUS IN THE LAND OF PLAY, i knew jim had to have a copy or the unrated version, so i had to ask , and all my nerd urges were satiated when i got the CUNTED up issue of batman in the mail today . thanks Jim

WHIP IT GOOD

about a year ago, when i cruised through the shitty city of sacramento, i ran into a mulleted menace named
jacoby jorgensen, i pretended to film a reality show about him and his friend, using a cardboard videocamera,
he's on the staff of a correctional mental health facility, and should probably get some help himself, unfortunately the show never aired, which i s a shame because it ended with a cambodian war criminal that had all the underground tunnels tattoed on his back, kicking jordy's ass with a bicycle chain, that episode only lives on in virtual reality, speaking of, in this day of emails and facebooks it's nice to get cool shit in the mail, unfortunately it's usually the worst shit ever, and then i feel like shit for throwing it away, however , just the other day i recieved a handmade "CHOE'S BEFORE HOES" leather belt in the mail from jacoby jorgensen,
it's shaped like my whale with the guts spilling out, and the holes for the belt loop are in the exposed ribs, NICE!!
anyways if you want to beat your kids, Jacoby has some quality belts here

WATERCOLOR BAMA

hey did you know we have a black president? i did this watercolor of Obama on
my jetblue flight home after the election, i was sitting in the exit row so i had extra
leg room, this annoying lady next to me kept bugging the shit out of me, so
i never filled in the face details, but i didn't need to everyone can still tell who it is,
he's already a demigod.

FUNNY BROWN MAN
